Application (5) Special Finishing Process (Papers)
Among the entire graphic production process, the post-press / finishing section offers a great variety of methods and styles for choices by customers. Besides the various binding alternatives mentioned earlier, you can treat the paper with other finishing processes such as lamination, varnishing, graining, foil-stamping, bronzing, embossing and die-cutting. In addition to converting the papers into the desirable shapes and functions, the finishing process perform surface finishing decoration for the papers as to enhance the elegance and subtlety of the overall product.
We hereby list those commonly-used special finishing processes as follows:
  (1) Lamination?/span>Through thermal and high pressure effect, adhesion of transparent PVC foil to paper surface. to attain gloss or protection. PVC foils can be classified as glossy and matt foils in accordance to its surface reflectiveness, and thus offering consumers choices for glossy or matt foil lamination.
(2) Varnishing: Through spraying or printing, applying a thin, transparent coating (called varnish) to printed work or book covers for gloss or protection purposes. Varnish can be classified into water-based and UV varnish. Water-based varnish is water-soluable compound that dries and forms a coating when applied to paper surface and exposed to infra-red light. UV varnish is non-aqueous lacquer compound that dries forms a glossy coating immediately by exposure to ultra-violet light, and normally coating by UV varnish is obviously more shining than those formed by water-based varnishes. Depending on reflectiveness of coating, both types of varnish can be further divided into glossy varnish and matt varnish. In addition, there are two ways of applying the varnish, namely overall varnishing and spot varnishing. In the former process, varnish is applied to the full surface of the printed sheet. In the later process, varnish is applied to selective parts of a printed sheet to achieve special effect or to add gloss to chosen parts or pictures. Twinkle powder can also be added to the varnish to achieve sparkling effect in the coated area.
  (3) Graining: Applying rolling pressure to paper, board. or 1aminated board through engraved metallic cylinders to give a textured effect. Paper so treated is called ‘grained paper? By applying graining process to normal paper, consumers can now obtain economically the same elegant and prestigious paper effect as the deluxe special paper.
  (4) Foil-Stamping: To seal a foil on paper or board by impressing a heated block with engraved images on the substrate, so as to improve the overall decorative effect. Metallic foil offers the color gold or silver, pigment foil can offer any color.
  (5) Bronzing: Process for obtaining a metallic printed effect such as gold. It is first printed with an adhesive ink and the bronze powder is then dusted on by hand, or by a bronzing machine.
  (6) Embossing: The process of raising a printed image using an un-inked block or die on paper or board. Differ from ‘blind embossing?which do not carry any printed image. Debossing is the reverse action for embossing.
